14 Aug 2010 - The Big Day Out!

International Taoist Tai Chi Awareness Day on August 14th was our biggest ever, and a great success, as over 1,000 members participated in the high point of the day - joining together with all the other branches of the Society across the globe for the World Wide Set at 2pm GMT.

Nearly 600 members packed Castle Park in Colchester, 400 at North Inch in Perth , and another 100 outside the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, to make this an event to remember and provide an impressive spectacle for the public audience.

The Society's Blog - The Tiger's Mouth - has many images of the world wide event, and is a must-see, whilst below are galleries of the 3 GB events and a video of the Colchester set, together with impressions from some of the participants. Please click on the images to open the videos and galleries.

Impressions: from the participants

Diane (53), Aberdeen : "We had a very happy bus load of people returning from Perth on Saturday. Everyone enjoyed the day enormously. Everything came together to produce a very satisfying and enjoyable afternoon. 400 plus members gathered together in one venue in Scotland - 4 sets - brilliant!!"

Margaret (70), Cambridge : "It was lovely, doing Tai Chi in the open air and having people you may not have met before all smiling, all doing the same thing. There's a kind of group energy that flows through you. I stopped thinking about what I was doing and just moved with everyone else. I felt loose and happy. And the sun shone!"

Caroline (24), Essex : "The spirit of it all was fantastic, and to be part of something worldwide gives it a wonderful family feeling."

Tracy (30), Glasgow : "Well what a fantastic day Saturday was. I had the most amazing time ever. I had been slightly concerned that I would feel like the odd person out, not having a clue what to do and getting everything wrong during the sets, however this was not the case. Everyone was so friendly, right through from the coach driver, to everyone on site, and I was made to feel welcome and at ease, right from the start, but OH DEAR!! front row for a photo shoot, what were they thinking? This has been an experience that I will treasure for life, and I would like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be part of it all. Looking forward to next year xx. THANKS EVERYONE"

Bob (57), Inverurie : "We have lots of demonstrations in branches throughout the year but having a Scottish Region Awareness Day demonstration makes the whole day feel special, the travelling and getting together."

Paul (60), Lincoln : "It was great doing it with the rest of the world, thinking of people in all the other countries who were doing the set at the same time as us. I thoroughly enjoyed it."

Norma (56), Perth : "I came on Saturday and was greatly impressed by the whole event - a huge amount of organisation and a lot of fun!"

Janette (60), Perth : "It was both a pleasure and a privilege that my first Awareness Day was the 40th Anniversary of the Society. We worked together to prepare for the day, and it all came together harmoniously. It was a wonderful sight to see 400 people doing the Set together in unison, and I felt humbled to be sharing the event with my brothers and sisters all over the world. Truly a memorable Tai Chi occasion for me."

Rachel (36), St Ives : "It was fantastic. We got the moves right and it was lovely being with everyone. It was a great atmosphere."

And a word from:

John Mitchell, Chief Executive of Uttlesford District Council, Saffron Walden, Essex : "I was impressed. It looked really good, and it was good to see so many people coming together for a very special occasion for the International Taoist Tai Chi Society. There's clearly a lot more to it than exercise: a general well being side and a spiritual side as well."
